If you decide straight off that you want a career as a butcher you can complete a Butcher Apprenticeship through your local TAFE. However, there are large supermarket chains with their own meat departments who can provide employment while you complete your apprenticeship. The apprenticeship is competency based and can be completed within 3 years.
To be a butcher, you must have good communication skills as there is still quite a lot of customer service involved. You must be committed as it entails at least 3 years to complete the qualification. Good hand/eye coordination is also important but the slicing skills are actually acquired gradually throughout the apprenticeship.
When you first start your apprenticeship you will be on approximately $300 per week, however a fully qualified butcher can earn in excess of $700 per week. As manager of the Meat Department in a large supermarket, you can earn up to $1000 per week.
As an apprentice or fully qualified butcher the working week is normally 38 hours but as you move into management, the hours may be more depending on the needs of the store.
There is a real shortage of butchers right across Australia so it is an ideal career path to choose.
