On 1 January 2010 safety net provisions commenced under the National Employment Standards and all NSW private sector workplaces moved into the national industrial relations system.
The General Retail Industry Award (Modern Award) commenced at 1 July with the transitional arrangements applicable over five years. This represents some of the most dramatic changes in award terms and conditions in 100 years causing significant confusion to retail employers nationally.
Do you understand how to apply the transitional provisions of the new award?
The five-year incremental transition between old state-based awards and the modern award system is a difficult and highly complex process. The Fair Work Ombudsman has already commenced its educational campaigns and is visiting retailers NOW to check compliance.
The ARA will be holding seminars to alleviate some of the confusion surrounding the new system.
These seminars are tailored to the retail sector and can be taken as full day or half day sessions:
