Hot Topics - brought to you by ARA Employment Relations expert Nick Tindley

The ARA is hosting a series of seminars conducted by ARA Employment Relations expert Nick Tindley to help retailers understand the complexities of IR laws and industry awards.

The Hot Topics seminar series consists of four half day sessions. Sessions can be purchased as individual units or as full-day packages (two seminars). See below for a full description of each session:

Seminar 1: Know your Modern Award

Employers continue to grapple with the complexities of the General Retail Industry Award 2010 and the Fast Food Award.  In this half day session you will be taken through the key components of the award of your choice and how they operate in practice, including: categorising full time, part time and casual employees; transitional provisions; identifying correct classification levels; hours of work, overtime and penalty rates; public holiday entitlements; and allowances.

Seminar 2: IR for the HR Practitioner

HR practitioners are increasingly being called on to advise their business on complex industrial relations issues. The difficulties associated with this are accentuated by the ever changing legal framework surrounding the IR system.

This half day session is designed to step HR practitioners through detailed information and practical scenarios which deal with the complex issues that arise during the employment lifecycle, from avoiding falling foul of discrimination laws and issues of misrepresentation at the recruitment stage to managing complex termination issues.

Seminar 3: Performance management & termination of employment

This course provides participants with strategies to effectively manage employee performance and considers both the legal and HR aspects of performance management, including: legislative framework; general protections issues; coaching and counselling; identifying issues and required standards; ongoing monitoring; avoiding stress claims; and termination of employment.

Seminar 4: Equal opportunity and harassment

This course will guide participants through employer responsibilities in relation to discrimination, sexual harassment and workplace bullying.  The course focuses on real life examples and recent case law.

Participants will be taken through key EEO and harassment issues, including:

What is discrimination?
What is harassment?
What is bullying?
Overview of case law including lessons for employers; and
Practical application – participants to work through a case study in groups and then through an action list to cross check their policies.
