A briefing for retail HR managers: The two big Employment Relations issues for 2012

In 2012 two major events will impact the operations of retail businesses, the 2012 Award Review and the commencement of new OHS laws. The Australian Retailers Association together with the ARA Retail Institute are hosting a briefing to update members and retail HR managers on these two important events.

2012 Award Review: Fair Work Australia has issued a statement setting out the process through which the review of modern awards will be undertaken. Members will be provided with vital information about that process and the impact it will have on retail businesses, including information on:
• Key changes ARA will be pursuing on behalf of retailers to assist in driving enhanced profitability;
• How ARA will pursue these changes; and
• Likely union claims and the industry’s defence against these.
OHS Laws: New OHS laws will come into effect throughout Australia in 2012. It’s vital retailers know the implementation dates of the legislation in each state and territory and understand key features and retailer obligations under these new laws, including:
• Identification of officers and related due diligence obligations;
• Obligations to consult with employees and other businesses about OHS matters; and
• Duties of stakeholders within their business
