The Scanning Code of Practice is a voluntary code that has been developed to ensure that the interests of customers are protected in the operation of supermarket scanning systems. Under the code supermarket stores who are signatories to the code are required to ensure the price-accuracy of their checkout systems and self pricing procedures. When an error occurs the customer could be entitled to that item free. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission sees the code as a positive step by the industry to implement self-regulation to prevent disputes and to introduce a mechanism to deal with disputes when they arise.
The Scanning Code of Practice is not administered by the ARA. The Scanning Code of Practice is now administered by the Australian National Retailers Association (ANRA). Please call 02 8249 4520 for more information.
