Statement from Australian Retailers Association Executive Director Richard Evans
Recent comments from Qrtsa (Queensland Retail Traders and Shop Keepers Association) Executive Director Scott Driscoll regarding the Federal Government's affect on consumer spending have been incorrectly linked to the Australian Retailers Association (ARA). The claims made by Scott Driscoll are irresponsible and in no way supported by the Australian Retailers Association (ARA).
Scott Driscoll and Qrtsa represent independent traders in Queensland and are not affiliated with the ARA - Australia's peak national retail industry body.
The most recent 7.5 percent jump in consumer sentiment suggests the Federal Government has played its part in restoring confidence and consumer spending with its $10.4 billion stimulus package. Unsubstantiated claims from ill-informed groups will do nothing to repair economic recovery. Right now retailers and the rest of the supply channel need consumers to spend responsibly and inject funds back into the economy.
For over 104 years, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) has been the peak industry body in Australia's $292 billion retail sector which employs over 1.2 million people. As an incorporated employer body under the Workplace Relations Act and with a range of member services including business consulting, policy development, advocacy and education, the ARA promotes and protects over 5000 independent and national retailers throughout Australia.
