Gender Equality

Position Statement

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) is committed to addressing imbalances and promoting gender equality across the retail sector to improve choice, career progression and financial security for women through their working life and into retirement.

The retail industry needs leaders in positions of power to come together to lead tangible and sustainable change in improving gender equality across the retail sector in Australia.

ARA WOMEN LEADERS IN RETAIL CEW SCHOLARSHIP

The ARA is delighted to be partnering with Chief Executive Women to provide a scholarship to an emerging woman leader in retail.
Although 75% of discretionary spend is made by women, only 17% of our sector is led by women CEOs, something the ARA is determined to change.
The intention of this inaugural scholarship is to accelerate the professional development of emerging women leaders, through undertaking study at Harvard Business School, and take their management and leadership skills to the next level.

Indegenous Reconciliation

Our reconciliation action plan

The ARA’s first Reconciliation Action Plan was endorsed by Reconciliation Australia in July 2022 and will run for 18 months until December 2023.

The purpose of our plan is to outline the initiatives that we will implement to help build internal capability and start working towards our vision for reconciliation. We will initially focus on those things we can control ourselves but use our influence to increase awareness and action about reconciliation.

Incorporating a strong First Nations voice into the ARA

The ARA is inviting expressions of interest from current and new members to join the ARA’s Advisory Committee for First Nations Retailers, alongside 18 other committees that provide expert advice and guidance to the ARA. The committee will also provide networking and peer learning opportunities for First Nations retailers.

The ARA strongly supports for the Uluru Statement from the Heart and a referendum to establish a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution.

LGBTQI+ Inclusivity

Position Statement

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) is committed to working with its members to address these inequities, so that LGBTQ+ people working in the retail sector can live according to their authentic gender identity and sexual orientation in all aspects of their lives.

Join our Position Statement for LGBTQ+ Inclusion

The ARA’s role is to outline the steps that we believe the sector needs to take to reduce inequalities for LGBTQ+ people. The ARA will also use its reach and influence to:

  • Showcase how leading retail employers are creating safer and more inclusive workplaces for LGBTQ+ people;
  • Ensure that retail executives who identify as LGBTQ+ are profiled as visible role models for the community; and
  • Facilitate collaboration and information-sharing between members to drive collective impact across the sector.
