January retail sales increase 7.5% year-on-year

Retail sales experienced solid year-on-year growth in January 2023 – an increase of 7.5% on the same time the previous year – according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Shoppers celebrated the New Year in their stride, spending more than $35 billion across the country. There were significant year-on-year sales increases for cafes, restaurants and takeaway (up 26.3%), department stores (up 16.6 %) and clothing, footwear and accessories (up 17.5%).

ARA applauds leadership and teamwork in RedCycle solution

Australia’s peak retail body, the Australian Retailers Association, has applauded the leadership and collaboration demonstrated by Woolworths and Coles, aiming to save thousands of tonnes of recyclable material from landfill. 

 ARA CEO Paul Zahra said the plan by the supermarket giants is a commendable move to help ensure environmental preservation.  

 “We applaud ARA Members Coles and Woolworths who have gone above and beyond, taking steps to intervene in providing a solution,” he said.

Boxing Day sales and domestic travel propel January retail growth

Australian retail sales increased 6.3% in January compared to the same time last year, according to the latest Mastercard SpendingPulse™, which measures in-store and online retail sales across all forms of payment.
Most retail categories maintained reasonable momentum after a record holiday spend. Lodging recorded the biggest increase in trade in January, up 15.9% compared to 12 months prior, closely followed by apparel (up 14.4%).

Research from the Australian Retailers Association (ARA), in conjunction with Roy Morgan, shows Australians will this year be spending an average amount of $118 each on their gifts (up 6.3% year on year).
