Media Release UPDATE

With Mother’s Day just days away, the Executive Director of the Australian Retailers’ Association (ARA), Russell Zimmerman, said he expects customers will flock to the shops this weekend to find the perfect gift for Mother’s Day this Sunday.

“As Mother’s Day is a special day for Australians to celebrate the important women in their lives, we predict shoppers will be visiting retail stores in search of the right gift to spoil their mum,” Mr Zimmerman said.

The ARA believes retailers who specialise in the sale of flowers, fashion, books and jewellery will notice a substantial increase in sales this weekend, with many of these retailers offering a range of exclusive offers.

Allan Winstanley, Chief Merchandise Officer at Myer, said with plenty of options to select from, finding the right gift for mum can be hard, as every mother is one of a kind.

“We believe in celebrating every mum’s unique interests. That’s why this Mother’s Day we’ve curated a range of Mother’s Day gifts from a cosy knit from Vero Moda to Aesop hand cream or a Fitbit, there’s something for every mum at Myer,” Mr Winstanley said.

Fashion retailers aren’t the only ones anticipating a busy weekend, with Interflora CEO Gerry Gerrard expecting his network of over 750 florists to deliver over 20,000 gifts of love to mums across Australia this weekend.

“Mother’s Day is the second busiest time of the year for our florists, and we have already seen a surge in orders since the beginning of April,” Mr Gerrard said.

“While Chrysanthemums remain the flower of choice for Mother’s Day, we have also noticed a distinct and growing trend for long native arrangements, indoor plants, and succulents,” Mr Gerrard added.

Although flowers are a more traditional way of expressing appreciation and gratitude to loved ones, Sharyn Villaverde, General Manager at Dymocks, said sales of books tend to increase throughout this period.

“In the lead-up to Mother’s Day, we see a rise in the sale of key categories of Fiction, Biography and Cooking,” Ms Villaverde said.
