South Australian retail trade to skyrocket this Boxing Day with landmark decision
Wednesday 7 November 2018: The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) commends the South Australian (SA) Government’s decision to offer local retailers the opportunity to trade on Boxing Day, as deregulated trading hours will increase employment within the industry and boost the South Australian local economy at the busiest time of the year.
The SA Government has also announced an increase to trading hours in the CBD, allowing retailers to open at 9:00am instead of 11:00am. The decision comes after strong demand from retailers and shoppers wishing to capitalise during this peak retail period.
South Australia now joins other states across Australia including Victoria, NSW, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT who operate during this peak period and hope the decision will influence the rest of Queensland and WA to follow suit.
Russell Zimmerman, Executive Director of the ARA, said this decision to increase retail trade on Boxing Day will allow local SA retailers to benefit from the most eventful trading day of the year.
“The SA Government’s decision to extend Boxing Day trade across all areas of SA is great news, as it will provide retailers with the opportunity to decide whether they would like to trade on the busiest times of the year to increase their sales,” Mr Zimmerman said.
“This will also allow consumers to shop in their local area, reaping the benefits of Boxing Day sales and consequently contributing to their local economy.”
As the retail industry employs more than 10% of the working population, the ARA believes this decision is also great news for SA retail staff.
“Boxing Day is the perfect opportunity for young workers to be given the opportunity to work and earn extra wages on the busiest Public Holiday of the year,” Mr Zimmerman said.
“This decision will also provide local retailers with equal opportunity to compete with online and interstate retailers who are already able to operate on this day.”
The ARA congratulates the SA Government on providing an exemption to these outdated restrictions to trading hours and will continue to support the Government’s efforts to re-introduce a deregulation Bill into Parliament.
