Statement from ARA CEO Paul Zahra on matters raised in Federal Parliament

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) was part of a joint proposal that was submitted to the Fair Work Commission last week on retail award arrangements.

The proposal is in no way connected to the Fair Work Amendment (Supporting Australia's Jobs and Economic Recovery) Bill 2020, and the Opposition knows this.

The arrangements that have been proposed exist in a number of other industry awards and have done so for many years.

If the ARA’s proposal is successful, entering into the arrangement would be voluntary. Every manager would be able to make their own decision to accept or reject the arrangement depending on how it affects them.

Contrary to the assertions of the Opposition, the application is more likely to result in an increase in pay for retail managers.

The Fair Work Commission proceedings are at a very early stage and we encourage members of the Opposition to respect that process.
