The AFL Grand Final is one of the biggest sporting events in Australia, and for Victorians, it comes with a public holiday. This guide covers when the holiday falls, where it applies, and what to expect from major retailers.

When Is The AFL Grand Final Public Holiday 2026

In 2026, the AFL Grand Final Public Holiday will be held on Friday, 25 September. The holiday always falls on the Friday before the Grand Final, giving Victorians a long weekend leading into the game.

Is The AFL Grand Final A Public Holiday?

Yes. The AFL Grand Final Eve public holiday is a public holiday in Victoria under state legislation. It was introduced in 2015 and has since become a regular fixture in the Victorian calendar.

Do States Outside Of Victoria Have A Public Holiday?

No. The AFL Grand Final Eve holiday is exclusive to Victoria and is not observed in any other state or territory. Outside Victoria, retail trading hours generally follow normal Friday schedules unless other local restrictions apply.

Victorian trading restrictions depend on the size and type of retail business. Exempt shops, such as smaller retailers and certain service providers, can usually open without restrictions. Non-exempt shops, including large supermarkets and department stores, may face reduced hours, especially in regional areas.

Coles stores are open on the AFL Grand Final public holiday, but opening hours may vary. It’s best to check the Coles store locator for the most up to date information on your local store.

Woolworths stores are open on the AFL Grand Final public holiday, but hours can differ. It’s best to check the Woolworths store locator for the most up to date information on your local store.

Bottle shops, including liquor sections in supermarkets, are typically open on the public holiday. Trading hours can vary, so it’s best to confirm with your local store before heading out.

Most Australia Post outlets are closed in Victoria on the public holiday. Licensed post offices located inside other businesses may still operate if the host store is open.

How trading hours are regulated in each State/Territory

Trading hours are subject to regulation at the state and territory level. While some jurisdictions only regulate trading hours on public holidays and other occasions, other states restrict hours generally or have other restrictions based on geographic area or type of retailer.

Generally, in jurisdictions that have regulations, small businesses are considered “exempt” from trading hour restrictions and it is “non-exempt” retailers, supermarkets and department stores that are most restricted in the hours that they can open.

Public holidays also vary across states and territories and so do the restrictions that apply for these holidays.
