Public holidays vary by state and territory, as do the trading restrictions that apply on these days.

Australian Christmas Public Holidays 2024
December
Christmas Day Trading Hours
NSW – Closed Christmas Day. No other restrictions.
VIC – Closed Christmas Day. No other restrictions.
TAS – Closed Christmas Day for large retailers and franchise groups over 250 employees. No other restrictions.
ACT – Closed Christmas Day. No other restrictions.
NT – Closed Christmas Day. Some other restrictions may apply to sale of alcohol in some areas.
QLD – Exempt shops: Independent Retail subcategory closed Christmas Day unless predominately a food/grocery store. No restrictions on other exempt shops.
Non-exempt shops: Closed Christmas Day. Extended trading hours in place in the lead up to Christmas. Includes large supermarkets, department stores and speciality retail.
SA – Closed Christmas Day. Trading hours for non-exempt shops in Greater Adelaide extended on certain days in the Christmas period.
Proclaimed shopping districts closed 25-Dec to 26-Dec and 1-Jan.
Non-exempt supermarkets must close on Boxing Day.
Midnight trading will be allowed on up to three weekdays during the period from 11 December to 23 December. These nights will be specified by the Minister later this year – Minister has not announced dates yet. The Minister’s preliminary view is to gazette Thursday 19 December, Friday 20 December, and Monday 23 December as the midnight trading dates.
WA – Closed Christmas Day. Extended hours apply for general retail in Greater Perth. Small retail and special retail can trade as per normal.
Other provisions apply in city of Albany and Katanning Shire.
