As the importance of sustainability continues to increase for the community, governments at the federal, state and local level are responding with support, advice and funding for businesses to do more with less, as our sector transitions to the low-carbon, circular economy of the future.  

Here is a snapshot of some of the government support that is available for Australian retailers looking to become more sustainable and reduce the social, environmental and financial impact of running their business.  

Federal Business Energy Advice Program 

Provides advice to help small businesses reduce their energy costs by getting better energy deals and reducing their energy usage. Businesses between 6-20 employees may qualify for a free consultation with an independent business expert, who will prepare a report tailored to your business. More information. 

NSW Sustainability Advantage 

Provides medium to large businesses in NSW with advice, training, education and networking opportunities to help improve their environmental sustainability and reduce costs. Paying members of the Sustainability Advantage program have access to practical workshops, one-on-one specialist support, seminars and facilitated networking opportunities. Sustainability Victoria 

Provides medium to large businesses in NSW with advice, training, education and networking opportunities to help improve their environmental sustainability and reduce costs. Paying members of the Sustainability Advantage program have access to practical workshops, one-on-one specialist support, seminars and facilitated networking opportunities. QLD ecoBiz Program 

Provides small to medium businesses in Queensland with a free assessment conducted by an ecoBiz coach, followed by a tailored action plan to help businesses save money on energy, water and waste bills, increase efficiencies and reduce environmental impacts. More information. 

SA Green Industries 

Provides a full listing of sustainability grants and support available to SA businesses, with a focus on unlocking the potential of the circular economy, developing infrastructure to process and create new products from waste, and helping businesses to implement cost saving waste management measures to improve productivity and environmental performance.
