Retail Voice CEO Message: 10 April 2024

Less than a month out from the Federal Budget, the government has continued its intense reform agenda with Treasurer Jim Chalmers today announcing an overhaul of Australia’s merger laws.

We welcome the Treasurer’s acknowledgement that most mergers have a positive outcome. And we note that mergers in retail can increase productivity, drive innovation and improve service offerings.

The ARA has been vocal in its support for economic policies that promote healthy competition and foster an environment where retailers of all sizes can succeed. However, getting the balance right is crucial to our economic success and job security. We look forward to reviewing and responding to the draft legislation in detail.

On Monday, Dr Craig Emerson’s interim report into the Independent Review of the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct was released. Whilst we support Dr Emerson’s push for a fair and competitive market, we continue to advocate for a balanced policy approach that drives innovation while protecting the interests of all parties involved.
