Retail Voice CEO Message: 18 October 2023

This is an intense month as we wrestle with the outcomes of the Voice referendum alongside the tragic situation in the Middle East.

With so many Australians directly and indirectly impacted by these events, team and customer wellbeing is high on the agenda during this challenging time.

The Voice to Parliament was a crucial debate in Australia’s history, and whilst we respect the decision of the Australian people, the outcome may be disappointing to many. We now need to take time to reflect on the outcome as a nation and ensure our reconciliation efforts continue.

The ARA remains committed to our work with members around reconciliation. As a country and sector, we need to double-down on the practical things we can do to progress within our sphere of influence.

In good news for inclusion and workforce participation, the Federal Government today introduced a Bill to Parliament which aims to provide more choice and flexibility for older Australians and eligible veterans to seek employment, through an enhanced pension Work Bonus.

This is something the ARA successfully advocated for to promote workforce participation and fill skill gaps, and we are pleased to see it coming to fruition.

In more good news, the government has also launched its five-year National Skills Agreement. While we would like to have seen more for private RTOs, the additional $3.7 billion invested into Australia’s vocational education and training sector is welcomed.

As we look towards the future of retail the ARA, in partnership with Salesforce, this week released the latest Connected Shopper Report – highlighting how retailers and shoppers are adapting to today’s modern landscape.
